Escape To: Chincoteague Island

Still in need of plans for Labor Day Weekend? We recommend a visit to a Virginia beach to soak in the last of the summer rays and frolic amongst the ocean waves. Dotted along the East Coast are many classic beach towns, each with an amusement park, putt-putt golf, haunted house, boardwalk and surf shops. For a different experience, head to Chincoteague Island, a small island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. This tranquil island feels like a step back in time thanks to the beautifully preserved buildings and the lack of neon lights and usual beach town trappings. Chincoteague is famed for its wild ponies, which actually live just across the marsh in Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island.

A round-up of our favorites on both sides of the bridge…

Visit the Beach - maybe you’ll be lucky enough to mingle with ponies whilst you sunbathe
Kayak - the coolest way to see the ponies is by gliding through the barrier island waterways
Cycle - the tiny island roads can get crowded, so hop on a bike and skip traffic
Hike - there are many trails and loops to meander
Clamming and crabbing - bring home supper
Watch a movie at a historic theater

Chincoteague Diner - you cannot go wrong with a diner
Bill’s Seafood Restaurant - long-standing seafood restaurant
Sea Star Cafe - artisanal sandwiches and more
Poseidon’s Pantry - perfect place for gourmet beach sandwiches
Village Restaurant - seafood by the waterside
Woody’s Beach BBQ and Eatery - unique beach shack that serves BBQ and seafood

Ice Cream
A whole category just for ice cream? Well, it is the beach...
Island Creamery - ranked among the best ice cream parlors in the country
Mr. Whippy - the sweetest family-owned soft-serve ice cream spot

It is easier than pie to fill a long weekend between both islands, far beyond the ideas we've listed above. Chincoteague Island is less than a 4-hour drive from the Washington, D.C. area, just the perfect distance to escape the city and unwind away from the hustle and bustle. Here at Dwel, we love exploring our beautiful state of VA (though we work throughout the tri-state D.C. area, we are all proud Virginians!) and sharing the gems we find with our guests. If you are searching for your perfect destination, simply reach out to the Team @ Dwel, we've got you covered.
