Spooktacular October

Pulling out sweaters and jackets to brace against the cool evening air is an unmistakable sign that fall has landed.  The harvest season conjures a deep sense of nostalgia in all of us, and gives us an insatiable craving for pumpkin and apple spiced everything. That nostalgia also drives us to seek out seasonal activities and events, such as apple picking and leaf peeping. With Halloween looming near, many events this month center around the spine-tingling holiday. If you dig celebrating the ghostly or festive sides of Halloween, you definitely want to check out these upcoming events around DC!

Town Tavern

Muggles and wizards alike are invited to head to Town Tavern in Adams Morgan for a Harry Potter-themed month of events, such as “Potter Paints Nights,” “Great Hall Dance Parties,” Hogwarts comedy nights, Quidditch Pong tournaments. While you may solemnly swear that you are up to no good, be sure to leave your dark magic at home as well. You are encouraged to dress in costume, but leave the weapons - pretend or otherwise - at home.

PUB Dread

DC’s pop-up bar is back with PUB Dread, a horror-themed bar, featuring some of the most intricate and frightening decorations we have ever seen. Imbibe on cocktail creations such as I See Dead People, Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!, and We All Float Down Here. This spot is fantastically popular, so be prepared to wait in line to enter.

Halloween Yacht Party

The National Zoo’s annual Halloween event is a quintessential part of the holiday in DC. Geared towards wholesome fun, the three-day celebration features 40+ treat stations, after-hours access to animal houses and exhibits, live entertainment, zoo education areas and commemorative trick-or-treat bags for the kids. Halloween-themed trails will be fun for a stroll, and the whole crew can get creative during the pumpkin carving competition. Make sure to come in costume!

Explore the spooky side of air and space at Air & Scare, the annual Halloween event at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Highlights include Spooktivity Stations, Monster Revue! Puppet Show, Flights of Fancy Storytime, Discovery Stations, and a Tot Zone.  Arrive in costume to get into the Halloween spirit and enjoy safe indoor trick-or-treating.

Dia de los Muertos Celebration 
Oct. 28, Nov. 1 and Nov. 3, varying hours
Various locations in Petworth
Petworth Arts Collaborative is hosting a celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, in DC's Petworth neighborhood. Saturday features altar making and a chance to learn the history of the holiday at Petworth Community Market. Later that day, CrossFit Petworth will screen The Book of Life, while on the following Wednesday, a Day of the Dead procession will take place on Upshur Street. That Friday, students from Petworth will showcase works that honor their loved ones, incorporating performance and visual art, at Upshur Street and Georgia Avenue NW.

It is hard to not get wrapped up in Halloween with such spooktacular events happening nearly every day!
